GENERAL CONTRACTOR FOR COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL &

With a successful history (over 40 years) in commercial construction, Schaus-Vorhies Contracting, Inc. (SVC) has found the best way to focus our resources around the customer’s needs is to develop separate service areas of specialty.
One area of service for owners/end-users is general contracting with a variety of project delivery systems offered, including turn-key design build with SVC in the role of construction manager and/or providing building and erection services.
The second area of business that SVC focuses on is subcontracting its services to larger general contractors. The types of services are metal building supply and erection, wood framing construction, and commercial construction.

STEVE THORNTON
President
Steve Thornton has been building more than structures—he’s been shaping SVC’s reputation for quality and trust since 2006. He began as a superintendent on landmark projects such as the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and advanced through the company with a combination of hard work and deep passion for construction.
In 2019, Steve and his wife, Kathy, became co-owners of SVC, and in 2025 he proudly stepped into the role of sole owner. He leads with a straightforward philosophy: do the work right and keep your word.
A lifelong Iowan, Steve is dedicated to projects that strengthen local communities and create stable jobs. He believes success includes making sure every crew member returns home safely to their families each night.
Outside of work, Steve values time with his wife, children, and grandchildren above all else. He and Kathy rarely miss a chance to support their grandkids’ activities and are loyal fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
AUSTIN ATWOOD
Project Manager & Estimator
Austin Atwood brings over a decade of construction experience to his role as Project Manager and Estimator. He began his career in 2013 and joined Schaus-Vorhies in May 2021. Austin earned his Construction Management degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 2017 and combines hands-on industry expertise with a strong technical foundation to successfully bid and manage projects from planning through completion.
He believes construction is the ultimate ‘team sport’ that requires all stakeholders involved on any project to be in alignment and working towards the same goal.
Outside of work, Austin enjoys spending time outdoors, watching sports, and spending time with friends and family.
COURTNEY UBBEN
Office Manager
Courtney Ubben serves as Office Manager/Accounting and Human Resources at Schaus-Vorhies Contracting, where she has been a key member of the team since February 2023. She brings sharp organizational skills and a steady attention to detail that keeps operations running smoothly and financial records precise.
Courtney is known for her approachable leadership style and her talent for creating an efficient, positive workplace. Her ability to balance accuracy with a welcoming presence makes her a trusted point of contact for both colleagues and clients.
Outside the office, Courtney enjoys spending time with her family, her pets and reading as many books as possible reflecting the same warmth she brings to her professional role.
